Social networking is deep. For lots of reasons. But, today, I happen to think it’s particularly intense because it’s got me thinking about how it is that I can share a laugh, swap stories, discuss the issues, mingle, chat and seem totally engaging and current from anywhere—even the bathroom. And that I can do so with anyone from anyplace in the world totally blows my mind. From Colorado to Cairo if I want. Boulder to Bangladesh too—all without ever having to shower, shake hands, open my mouth or leave the comfort of my living room. Talk about friendship with benefits!

Psst, you. I want to talk to you about the Soulmate List. Also known as the Life Partner List, it’s the itemized, prioritized, idealized roster of traits, tastes and druthers of must-have qualities we want the person of our dreams to possess. It’s usually a make-or-break proposition, high-stakes in its attempts to define who and what our ideal mates must look like, sound like, feel like, be like. And depending on how serious we are about our List, it can backfire and blow up like mad if we get too attached to it and take our eyes off of life as we knew it.

Have you heard about the latest menace on the streets, popcorn brain? No, I’m not hurling an insult at you, so calm down. I’m telling you about a very real threat to our overall mental health and wellness: popcorn brain. A group Chinese researchers did a big study recently and found that people who spend lots of time shopping, tweeting, texting, and IMing on their electronic devices have less gray matter, or brain power, to apply to critical thinking compared to folks who live holes and have no connection to computers, cell phones, e-readers, TVs, radios, appliances and anything else powered by an on/off button. Those researchers dubbed this electronic obsession as Internet Attention Deficiency. I think. And don’t ask me who officially dubbed this thing popcorn brain either. I can’t be sure because I wasn’t on the site long enough to actually retain what they said.
