There are times when only a song will do. And this is one of them.
For as far back as I can remember Joe Cocker, I’ve linked the the grizzled crooner to his scratchy rendition of ‘You Are So Beautiful’ (and, as of the eighties, the gospelesque hit ‘Up Where We Belong’). But it’s this tune, ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ that really sings to me. It’s about the everlasting importance of friendship and I’m loving it right about now. I know, we’ve already got the Beatles version. And we’ve got Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder and friends who came along with their megahit ‘That’s What Friends are For’, and we can’t leave out Bill Withers’ classic, ‘Lean on Me’. They all tug at my heartstrings, but I have my reasons for pulling Joe out of the bag this time around. The main one: he’s clearly unstable.

For the past three decades and then some—ever since I got the hang of running my mouth—I’ve been trying in vain to get my mother to do my bidding.
